One quote from Emma sticks out in my mind, as she is waiting for Harriet to be done shopping and sees "the butcher with his tray, a tidy old woman travelling homewards from shop with her full basket, two curs quarrelling over a dirty bone, and a string of dawdling children round the baker’s little bow-window eyeing the gingerbread..." I love this little "window" into what life was like back then, and the part about the children is especially charming to think about this time of year. Just one of hundreds of little moments to enjoy in her novels.

This is such a great scene! It's so evocative and makes Highbury feel like a real village. Austen brings this period to life with such beautiful specificity.
